The Academic Vice President of the University
Appointment and Accountability
The Academic Vice President of the University shall be appointed by the President of the
University and shall be accountable to the President.
Powers and DutiesThe Academic Vice President shall have the following powers and duties:
- advises and assists the President in the exercise of his/her powers and duties and ensures proper enrolment of students
- avows students’ academic record keeping on permanent registration materials and proper procedures;
- ensures timely preparation of registration materials, procedures, and services;
- plans, organizes, and directs library collection development and services;
- ensures the eligibility of academic staff for teaching both in the Degree and TVET programmes;
- ensures that the institution prepares high quality graduates;
- follows up and ensures the proper implementation of courses offered in accordance with the academic calendar of the university;
- ensures that the academic staff members are engaged in research activities and preparation of teaching materials;
- ensures that all examinations are at standard level and prepared timely;
- serves as a member of the management committee of the University;
- leads and coordinates the college/faculty/institute/school deans and standing/adhoc committees under his/her span of responsibility;
- evaluates the performance of the college/faculty/institute/school deans and other staff under the span of his/her control and reports the results to the president;
- ensures the planned staff promotion policy establishment and implementation;
- recommends and takes personal actions under the span of his/her control;
- facilitates programme development, operations, and evaluation;
- ensures correct interpretation of the academic rules and regulations and adjudicates appeals and exceptions;
- ensures an effective implementation of quality assurance system and academic resources development;
- prepares annual plans and quarterly reports and presents these to the president;
- conducts classes when assigned;
- chairs and takes part in different committees;
- performs other duties as assigned by the president and Senate.
Disciplinary Actions that the Academic Vice President can take
The Academic Vice President (him/herself or upon the recommendation of a discipline committee) may take any one of the following actions, or when the circumstances justify a combination of them against the deans of colleges/faculties/ institutes/schools, heads of academic departments, or others under his span of supervision, including members of the
standing committee, found responsible for violations of the academic and administrative rules and regulations of the University, or the following breaches of duty:
A) Oral Reprimand for:
- procrastinating one’s duties and responsibilities without any convincing reasons for less than three events;
- coming late to any invitation (workshops, seminars, meetings, etc) by the University for less than three events;
- coming late to office for less than three occasions;
- other related breaches of duty.
Written warning for: - procrastinating one’s duties and responsibilities without any convincing reasons for three or more events;
- coming late to any invitations (workshop, seminars, meetings, etc) by the University for three or more events;
- coming late to office for three or more events;
- attempting to work against any rules and regulations of the University;
- refusing to receive letters, notices, circulars, phones, orders , etc.;
- disappearing (absence) from office during work hours without the knowledge of the Academic Vice President and convincing reasons for less than three occasions;
- other related breaches of duty
